Urabá
About Urabá

Urabá is a humid, low-land area bordering the Caribbean in the northern portion of the state of Antioquia (and Chocó). This agricultural region is severely economically depressed, with its population largely working with agricultural produce such as bananas. For decades, Urabá has been decimated by massacres and assassinations by left-wing guerrillas and right-wing paramilitaries.
Because of its ports, combined with its rugged and difficult to access terrain, the area is viewed as a strategic point for illicit activity. As a consequence, the people of the area have difficulty accessing a quality education.
Project
Developing Minds Foundation is sponsoring a literacy project for Colombian families living in the conflict zone of Turbo, a rural and impoverished municipality located in the Urabá region of Colombia.
By sponsoring a literacy project that includes books, workshops and teacher training, our aspiration is to improve the quality of life for people of Urabá and to help create an environment of opportunity as way to help address some of the root causes of the conflict.
