Mutatá, Urabá

Background

Mutatá in the Urabá region of Colombia remains one of the country’s most difficult areas, with ongoing activity among illegally armed groups, including neo-paramilitary and left-wing guerrilla groups . Many of the problems revolve around narcotrafficking, extorsion and other illict activities. With its difficult terrain and link to strategic ports, the area continues to experience high levels of violence and deep poverty.

Project

Developing Minds Foundation supports a project that promotes literacy for over 500 campesino families living in the Mutatá, Urabá municipality. Through our operating partner Secretos Para Contar, the sponsorship of this educational project consists of assembling a group of talented writers and editing, producing and personally delivering a collection of books to families in this rural area. These books have been written using accessible, easy-to-understand language based on its target audience and every two years the content of these books is renewed so as to preserve the interest of the readers. The trilogy includes one book focused on literature exalting the joy of reading, a second on practices useful for rural families going about their daily lives, and third book about science or general knowledge.
