City of God Favela

Background

ImageThe City of God favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has been labeled one of the world’s most dangerous urban slums. This reputation has grown since the release of the 2002 movie entitled City of God, highlighting a culture of extreme violence that results from heavily armed rival drug factions that permeate the community and have de facto rule over its residents; however, what the movie does not show is that this crowded neighborhood of over 65,000 predominantly consists of families working desperately to overcome poverty, striving to make ends meet amid a chaotic environment and aspiring for a better future for their children.

Project

Developing Minds Foundation, in partnership with CDI, is sponsoring a school to teach 300 students per year from this severely underprivileged community how to use computers, software and Internet as a means to develop adequate skills to integrate into the job market. In addition, teachers instill into the students an appreciation for principles of citizenship, covering topics relevant to their communities such as non-violence, health, sex education and human rights.
